Te Kuiti, the world capital of sheep shearing, is easily recognizable by its statue of the shearer. In the 1860s, the members of the King Movement withdrew from the area after their defeat in the Orakau Pa. Originally, this land belonged to the Ngati Maniapoto. The city remained reserved for Maori until the 1880s, when the train arrived. The first Europeans were railway workers who built the Waiteti viaduct, then came the farmers, and the region was colonized.
