With a population of 20,500, the small city of Cambridge is located on the banks of the longest river in New Zealand: the Waikato River. Its British touch, imported by the first settlers, has persisted, with its wide streets and numerous parks, such as the very pleasant Te Koutu Domain. Before the arrival of the Europeans, it was the site of Horotiu Pa, the fortified village of a powerful Maori tribe. In 1864, this tribe was dislodged and the place was used as a military base for the 3rd Waikato Regiment, led by General Cameron. It is now the center of a very productive agricultural region where many horse breeders have taken up residence.
