Located 130 kilometers from Auckland and built around the beautiful Waikato River (the longest river in the country), Hamilton is the fourth largest city in the country and counts no less than 180,000 people. Specializing in agriculture, research and education, it has not taken as much of a turn for the tourist industry as its counterparts, but still has many attractions, especially related to its river activities and its geographical location. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants and the hotels are fairly affordable. Hamilton is known throughout the country for its rugby team: the Chiefs. For a Kiwi, rugby is sacred.
