Kaitaia, the main town in the Far North district, is located at the base of the Aupouri Peninsula and means "abundant food" in the Maori language. The last major town before Cape Reinga (110 kilometers away), Kaitaia is a rather quiet town where forestry and tourism thrive. Tourism is possible mainly because of its location at the start of the 90 mile beach. The town has no coastline. It is necessary to go fourteen kilometers to the south-west, to Ahipara, to enjoy the beach and the few good addresses in the area. The sunsets are memorable as well as the waves for the surfers.
