Only a half-hour drive from Auckland, the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park offers 16,000 hectares of primeval forest and 250 kilometers of trails to explore a wilderness of lush vegetation and wide black sand beaches. This "Wild West" is a real playground for hikers and experienced surfers, who particularly enjoy the famous Piha Beach. The park is also popular with mountain bikers. Karekare Beach is also famous for the beautiful opening scene of the movie The Piano Lesson, directed by Jane Campion. The waterfall of the same name can be reached after a five-minute walk.
