Surrounded by green hills, Mizan Teferi is the former capital of the Bench ethnic group with a tragic destiny. This people of valorous warriors, farmers and honey collectors, long withdrawn in isolation in the heart of the thick forests of Kaffa, saw their culture almost destroyed. Until the mid-twentieth century, the Bench were mercilessly hunted down to supply the bulk of the troops of slaves sold by local rulers to Arab and European merchants. Mizan is also the gateway to the Bench-Maji region, a remote territory of ethnic groups with strong cultural characteristics, some of whom sometimes come to town for the Tuesday market.
