Altitude: 1,680 m. Population: 220,000. Distance from Addis Ababa: 346 km. The main town in western Ethiopia and former capital of the Kaffa region, Jimma has always enjoyed great prosperity thanks to its rich natural environment and crossroads location. In addition to its immense timber reserves, the fertile soils allow for varied agriculture, which has always been dominated by coffee growing. This wealth enabled the Oromo monarchy to maintain its power over the province until the early 20th century, thanks to the substantial tribute it paid to its powerful Christian neighbor to the north. Shortly afterwards, this potential earned Jimma the favor of the Italians, who invested in the city's development. The architecture of several public buildings is still a visible trace of this recent boom. The town's commercial vitality is particularly evident at the main market held here every Thursday, the largest in the region and attended by between 20 and 30,000 people! Also in town, you'll find numerous stalls selling wickerwork, jewelry and all manner of wooden objects, from three-legged stools to huge armchairs carved from a single piece, a genuine local speciality (although increasingly rare).
