The road from Harar to Jijiga offers a fine view of the city walls, before descending into lush green valleys planted with khats, coffee and fruit trees towards Babillé (45 minutes in total). Here you'll find the thermal springs whose bottled water is distributed throughout the eastern part of the country, and it was here that Henry de Monfreid, the privateer writer, used to take refuge when the heat of the Red Sea became unbearable. These sojourns inspired one of his great novels, Vers les terres hostiles de l'Éthiopie. People come here for the camel market and the Babillé shrine.
