Located 215 km from the capital, the park is accessible all year round, although the rainy season can make access to certain sites more difficult and wildlife observation more complicated. Created in 1966 on the advice of Unesco, this park was the first in Ethiopia, on a 756 km2 site rich in dense fauna and great biodiversity. Stretching across plains from 750 m above sea level to the summit of the 2,007 m-high Fantalé volcano, the park is bordered to the south by the Awash River gorge and intersects the territory of three main nomadic ethnic groups: the Itou, Afar and Kereyou.
