Altitude: 1,900 m. Population: 180,000. Distance from Addis Ababa: 47 km. The Oromo town of Bishoftu, renamed "Mount of Olives" (Debre Zeit in Amharic) after Menelik's conquests of the Oromo, is a popular holiday destination for the capital's inhabitants, thanks to its many lakes. Prices double at weekends, so be sure to book in advance, as hotels fill up fast. Its center, however, is that of a hectic, disorganized city, bustling with trucks and bajajs, at the crossroads of trade routes from the south and east of the country, particularly since the opening of the highway linking the city to Addis Ababa in 2014.
