Altitude: 2,207 m. Population: 330,000 Distance from Addis Ababa: 750 km (western route via Dabra Markos). Built in the foothills of the Simien massif, overlooking Lake Tana, the town of Gondar is ideally situated for exploring these two major tourist attractions in northern Ethiopia. The city itself and its surroundings boast a wealth of civil and religious architectural treasures that bear witness to Gondar's rich past as the capital of Ethiopian rulers from the 17th to the 19th century, in particular its fortified town with its well-preserved castles and religious buildings (the Fasiladas baths and the Dabra Birham Selassie church), at the heart of Ethiopia's biggest religious festivals, Timkat and Fasika.
