Altitude: 3,020 m. Population: 80,000. Distance from Addis Ababa: 840 km. This town, which marks the return to Amhara country, is the starting point for excursions into the Simien National Park, which can also be organized from Gondar. The town is not at all pleasant, with budget hotels of poorer quality and more expensive than elsewhere, blatant poverty, cloudy mountain weather and a cold that is hard to feel at night. The atmosphere is gloomy, and time seems to stand still in the few local cafés and restaurants, where cards are reduced to the few foodstuffs that make it this far, and everyone is looking for a bit of WiFi to escape. The stopover will therefore be brief: time to prepare for your trek in the Simien or to regain your strength before setting off again. It's not compulsory either: the adventure can be less expensive from Gondar, all inclusive.
