It's hard to imagine that this small, isolated town in the far north of the country is the cradle of one of the most important civilizations in Ethiopian history, rivaling the great empires from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. Today, it is completely closed to tourism due to war. Aksum was a martyred city that will carry a heavy burden from this very recent war. On November 29, 2020, Aksum was bombed and "several hundred civilians" were massacred by the Eritrean army, according to Amnesty International. On December 15, 2020, Ethiopian forces massacred nearly 750 people who had taken refuge in the Church of St. Mary of Zion.
