This small town lies 110 km from Adigrat. After crossing the Rebbi Erieni pass, the descent to Adwa offers a spectacular panorama of isolated peaks, arranged like the pieces of a gigantic chess game. It was in this grandiose setting in March 1896 that Emperor Menelik II's troops clashed with the Italian expeditionary force. This battle, which saw the defeat of the Italians, marked the first victory of an African army over a European army, led by Ras Alula with, it is said, the help of Saint George. It was also not far from Adwa that the first Catholic mission was established in the 16th century.
