This small town, whose name means "salt water" in Tigrigna, was the scene of a decisive battle on March 31, 1936, when Italian troops clashed with the Ethiopian army led by the Negus. European air superiority played a key role in the outcome of the battle, which marked the beginning of the Italian military occupation of the country. For the first time in its history, Ethiopia was to be ruled by a foreign power, from 1936 to 1941. Since the existence of the new parallel road linking Weldyia to Mékélé, the town has been of little interest to visitors, apart from the Saturday market.
