Located inland, Šiauliai was founded in 1236. It is surrounded by lakes Talsa, Ginkunai and Rekyva, the tenth largest lake in the country. The country's fourth-largest city, Šiauliai is an industrial center known for its precision mechanics, television equipment from the country's first radio laboratory, computers, bicycles, etc. Šiauliai is also a training center for secondary school teachers, and hosts a branch of Vilnius University and a University of Applied Sciences. It is the largest town in the Žemaitija region, historically known as Samogitie.
