Liepāja takes its name from the lime trees that line the alleys of the old town. It was a fishing village before the Livonian order settled and founded the town. In Soviet times, Liepāja (Libau in German) became a military base for submarines and a metal port (shipbuilding, aeronautics). Larger than Ventspils, and also spared from ice in winter, the port could have become a ship graveyard at the end of the USSR. Today, to the delight of its inhabitants, it is a driving force behind the region's economic activity. Liepāja is also a town of musicians, as you will soon discover.
