Tukums' geographical position is ideal for hiking, swimming and historical tours. Owned by the Livonian order since 1253, Tukums prospered under the influx of Germanic merchants and craftsmen who clustered around the castle. In the 17th century, Jacob Kettler, Duke of the Curonian Spit, gave the town its moment of glory with a rapid expansion and development. The town boasts a number of national sporting and artistic celebrities. It was also here that Viktor Tsoï, a Soviet rock legend, died in a car accident.
