The small capital, in the checkerboard plane, has some beautiful Creole houses of coloured wood. Most, not restored since the end of colonialism, are unfortunately in poor condition. These houses testify to French influence in Dominica. They represent a curious mixture of simple and solid structures, designed to withstand the weather, and excessively complicated ornamentations (many blinds, jealousies breakthroughs in walls). On the rest of the island, the houses are usually made of sheet metal, painted with rastas colours.Roseau has two markets: Visit the very lively New Market. At random streets, you can also admire some old churches, whose large stone foundations date back to 300 years for the older ones. Reed also houses a museum on the history of the island. In the north of the city, at the foot of Morne Bruce, you can visit the Botanical Gardens of Dominica; they were installed in 1890 at the location of a sugar cane field and enjoy climatic conditions ideal for tropical plants. They were organized into two parts, the first ornamental vocation, the second to develop plants for local agriculture. In the 1960 s and 1970 s, the Roseau Botanical Gardens enjoyed an excellent reputation in all the Caribbean for their cricket fields! It is true that at the time Dominica was still under English influence. They even had twice, the supreme recognition, the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of Edinburgh. To help you in your visit, the Wildlife and Flora department offers a garden Plan, Légendé to recognize the different species. Your visit may lead you to a memory of Hurricane David, a bus crashed under a baobab…
