A surprise village for Stevenson who, in his itinerary, planned to camp on the banks of the lake of Bouchet, no one having mentioned to him the presence of a commune at this place. After having lost his way under the cover of darkness, he was guided towards Le Bouchet-Saint-Nicolas by two inhabitants in a hurry. His description of the inn where he spent the night reflects the rurality and simplicity of the customs of the time in these remote regions. A carved wooden statue of the writer and his donkey Modestine remains in the centre of the village. Numerous ancient vestiges can be seen in Le Bouchet, such as calvaries, old watering holes and even the Barriol inn, described by Stevenson.
