The name of Lavoûte-sur-Loire comes from the Latin word volvere which means to turn on oneself. This name characterizes well the situation of the village established near a loop of the Loire, in the heart of the valley of the same name. With only 800 inhabitants, Lavoûte plays on the tourist attraction of its natural spaces, including those near the river (the Loire gorges can be reached in Vorey, 10 km to the north), but also on the presence of the castle of Lavoûte-Polignac, a superb castle of the XIIIth century, which is located west of the city. Several shops are located in Lavoûte and a market is held there on Friday mornings.
