The seat of Pointe Coupee Parish, New Roads, formerly known as Poste de Pointe Coupee, is one of the oldest communities in the Mississippi Valley established by French settlers. The first trading post was established in the 1720s. It was home to many Creoles, as well as slaves from Africa and the West Indies (the names and origins of each slave are recorded in the New Roads courthouse archives). Today it is a quiet little town, nestled between the False River and the Mississippi River, on the road to Marksville and the Crossroads area.
