Lavoûte-Chilhac, a picturesque village of 300 inhabitants, is classified as one of France's most beautiful villages. It is set in a very narrow loop of the Allier, which wraps around the village to form a peninsula. It came second in the "Village préféré des Français" poll in 2022. The Benedictine priory of Sainte-Croix-de-Lavoûte-Chilhac was founded in 1025. Restored in 1965, it is protected by several Monuments Historiques. The bridge linking the priory and the district on the peninsula to the village's second quarter probably dates from the 15th century. One of its arches also dates from the 11th century.
