In the harbor of Cape Schiso, formed by ancient lava, Naxos, the first of the Greek colonies of Sicily established in 750 BC, once lay. According to the legend, Theocles was on board a ship whose boatswain had not properly cooked the liver of a victim before offering it in sacrifice to Neptune. The latter, furious, triggered a storm and sank the ship. Theocles, the only survivor, ran aground in the bay of Naxos. Amazed by the beauty of the site, Theocles returned and convinced some Greeks to settle there. Since then, buildings have sprung up and the beach is popular with tourists, as it is close to Taormina.
