Situated 25 km north of Syracuse, this city was founded by Greeks from Megara in the 8th century B.C. It was named Hyblaea in honour of the Sicilian king Hyblona who granted them the land. It owes its expansion, among other things, to the quality of its ceramics. Abandoned after a final destruction in the 3rd century B.C., it now has a wide variety of ruins, from fortifications to houses, baths and workshops. A visit to the local museum will pleasantly complete this journey back in time, even if the most beautiful pieces of the site were blown to it by its big brother the museum of Syracuse.
