On the road from Noto to Syracuse, Avola is famous for the quality of its pointed almonds: the pizzuta, an almond with a "perfect oval" as described by the writer Leonardo Sciascia. The region is also famous for its Nero d'Avola wine, one of the best in Italy and known worldwide. This black grape variety from the Avola region is found only in Sicily. But it is actually grown more in the Trapani area than in Avola. This wine, which ages well as a vin de garde, has acidic, spicy and fruity notes.
