Camarina, a famous Greek archaeological site, is of great interest. The city was founded by settlers from Syracuse in the 6th century BC and had difficulty in freeing itself from this cumbersome tutelage, which led to its destruction several times: in 553 BC for not respecting the borders of Syracuse, then in 484 BC by Gelon the tyrant of Syracuse. However, a period of prosperity begins after its reconstruction. Then the situation degenerates under Carthaginian domination: it undergoes the Punic wars, until its final destruction in the 3rd century BC by the Messinians and the Romans.
