Sciacca owes its name to water, from the Latin ex aqua and the Arabic as saqah meaning "crack". Its vocation as a spa town dates back to antiquity, when it was founded by the Greeks of Selinunte in thefifth century B.C. It is said that Daedalus discovered the virtues of its waters, which flowed from the walls and cracks of the caves of Mount Kronio. The Arab domination since 840 left many traces, especially in the districts where the maze of tortuous lanes is not without reminding the Arab medinas. The Normans then occupied it, leaving many buildings, as well as the Bourbons Sciacca is also the second fishing port of Sicily, after Mazara del Vallo. An active city of 40,000 inhabitants, divided between port and tourist activities, which does not lack charm. The era of the thermal baths is over - the splendid and mythical hotel of the thermal baths is closed - but the beach does not lack charm. The favorite activity of the locals is to search in the sand for pieces of salmon coral, polished and washed up by the waves. The less fortunate can buy them in the town's stores.
