This island off the coast of Trapani is a destination off the beaten track. First of all because it is totally isolated unlike the Egadi islands and especially very far from the Sicilian coasts, right in front of Tunisia, it is almost African! Rather mountainous, it has a significant number of volcanic craters, the highest of which is the Montagna Grande (836 m). Moreover, there are still many volcanic phenomena on the island: coastal hot springs with waters of 30 to 70 °C, salt water wells, steam jets or even caves full of steam. The town of Pantelleria lies at the foot of Mount Sant'Elmo, to the northwest, with a picturesque port above which rises a medieval fortress. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it was then a Phoenician colony used as a landing place for Carthaginian ships until the Roman conquest. Then, you know the rest, it was Arab, Norman and finally Sicilian. Going south from Pantelleria, we come across the remains of the ancient prehistoric center of Mursia, then we discover the group of Sesi, megalithic funerary monuments in the form of domes. The castle and its ancient foundations (it was restored in the 18th century) are also interesting. But the must is the coastal trip by boat, to explore the underwater caves. For some years now, the island has been attracting celebrity tourists : Madonna and Sting regularly visit the island, and Carole Bouquet is the owner of a vineyard and produces her own wine. That's all there is to it On the seafront, there is a tourist office (open from June to September, +39 334 390 9360; www.prolocopantelleria.it)
