The main island of the archipelago is very flat, there is only one ridge of 302 m of altitude. It has about 4,300 inhabitants. Favignana is famous for its tuna fishing, and every year in May the ancestral rite of the mattanza takes place, compared by some to bullfighting. The only difference is that there is no audience, so it is not a bloody spectacle, but a method of fishing. The Florio tonnara works at full capacity. The village of Favignana, the main town of the islands, is not lacking in charm with its small port, the Florio palace built in 1876, its churches, the remains of the fortifications, its many cafés and restaurants as well as its stores. The main reason for visiting the island is its clear and transparent waters and its picturesque coastline with its numerous caves. To the northwest is the beautiful beach of Cala Grande and the rocks of Galera and Galeona. A privileged way to get around the island is by bicycle and there are many rental companies. However, be careful in summer to avoid sunstroke: there is no shade on the horizon!
