Located at 300 meters above sea level, southwest of Palermo, Mount Royal overlooks the Conca d'Oro, the fertile plain of the Bay of Palermo, and the river Oretto. Monreale now has 30,000 inhabitants. Originally, this site was occupied by an Arab hamlet where the Norman kings liked to come to hunt, when King William II, in 1174, decided to build a vast complex combining a church, a convent and a royal palace. The result was an incomparable masterpiece, a symbiosis of Arab, Norman and Byzantine styles, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The successive alterations to the cathedral have not altered its artistic splendour and value, while its cloister, the only remaining element of the Benedictine monastery, is simply grandiose. The dome of Monreale has been a regular venue for concerts for many years. Every year, the Week of Sacred Music is held in November. In May, the municipality also organizes the Festa del SS. Crocifisso. The main square is lined with terraces of cafés and ice cream parlours. There is a beautiful view of Palermo from the heights
