Mbale is one of the 20 most populous towns in Uganda, with a population of 100,000 at an altitude of 1,150 metres at the foot of Mount Elgon. It is a stopover town for hikers and people heading to the Sipi Falls. Despite the hustle and bustle of the town centre, Mbale is a pleasant town with quiet neighbourhoods and views of the rocky walls of the Wanale Ridge. In even years, between August and December, the Mbale area is the scene of incredible ceremonies (dances, songs...) on the occasion of theimbalu, the circumcision of young Bagisu men, a true rite of passage to adulthood.
