South of Fort Portal, the Kasenda area, located between the foothills of the Rwenzori Range and the Kibale Forest, is dotted with emerald crater lakes. According to legend, these lakes were created by Ndahura, the first king of the Bacwezi, when he withdrew from power to give it to his son Wamala. More rationally, these lakes are the result of intense volcanic activity that shaped much of the landscape of western Uganda 10,000 years ago. These lakes stretch from north of Fort Portal to Queen Elizabeth Park, but this area has the highest concentration of lakes, with some 60 beautiful waterholes whose lush banks provide a haven for a wide range of birds and butterflies. There is a wide range of accommodation, with superb lodges and several camps dedicated to ecotourism. Hikers and nature lovers will be in heaven! Although each lodge has its own activities and prices, you should be able to enjoy canoeing and boating on the lakes that dot the region, watch the birdlife during bird watching, or just enjoy a spot of fishing, enjoy hiking in the lush, rolling countryside, cooling off at a waterfall, taking in the beautiful views from the hills and crater rims, walking the zigzagging trails, or learning about the customs of the people who live in the farmlands.
