Masaka, a town of just over 100,000 people, is located 140 kilometres from Kampala. Founded as an Indian trading post at the beginning of the 20th century, the town suffered enormously from the war against Tanzania in 1979. The centre has since been rebuilt and it is now possible to buy agricultural products (bananas, avocados, pineapples, tomatoes...) from the surrounding countryside. Apart from its squat Catholic cathedral, adorned with bricks, the city has no notable architectural buildings. Most of the tourists hardly stop in Masaka, which nevertheless has some more than decent restaurants and hotels
