"Playa Girón: the first defeat of imperialism in Latin America," the large signs along the roadside proclaim. It was here, on April 15, 1961, that the landing of anti-Castro Cuban mercenaries, trained, financed and supported by the US administration, began and failed. The attackers taken prisoner - nearly 1,200 men - were exchanged, a year later, for food for children and medicines unavailable since the embargo decreed by Washington. A museum recalls the events. Playa Girón also has a beautiful preserved site and a nice beach. Several good reasons to stop there.
