Fay-sur-Lignon, the capital of the highest canton in the Haute-Loire, is located on a basalt dyke at an altitude of 1,200 m, on the site of an ancient fortress overlooking the Lignon valley. A stronghold and a battleground during the Wars of Religion, Fay-sur-Lignon became a stopping-off point on the road between the Velay and Rhône valleys. Fay-sur-Lignon belonged to the Vivarais before being attached to the Velay during the French Revolution. Its parish church has an early choir, probably dating from the 11th century. It was probably built on the site of the first chapel of the Fay-sur-Lignon fortress. Walks and hikes departing from Fay-sur-Lignon will appeal to nature lovers - a stopover on the GR30. Fishermen will also be delighted, whether they wish to tease the fish in the wild streams or settle down on the banks of a pond with a farmer who opens his waters to the public in summer. Fay-sur-Lignon is also renowned for its horse fair, usually held on October 20, and attended by breeders from all over the South-East.
