Espaly and Saint-Marcel, two communities became a single commune in the Year II of the Republic (1795), which had a past of extraordinary wealth and although bordering the Puy-en-Velay, jealously kept their specificity. The Arbousset still echoes the passage of Charles VI and the siege of the states of the Languedoc, the dolphin, the future Charles VII, the siege of the city by the royalist troops, the capture and the resumption of the city by the Baron of Saint-Vidal in the time of the religion wars. Long before Le Puy (the city of Anis), Saint Marcel was the seat of the first church in the region: bears witness to the fountain of the legend of the beheaded saint bearing his head. The fountain still flows between the Borne and the bridge of Estrouilhas, the place of the deadly duel between Pierre de la Rodde and Antoine de Saint-Vidal in 1591. The city of the four castles and the thirteen bridges is remarkable by its incomparable basaltic organs, but also by the history of the lime ovens, the quarries of Denise and Viouzou, the archeological finds and the Roman villa, the garden pavilions, the statue of Joseph and the Basilica, and finally Le Pezouillou, which is zircons and sapphires.
