A strange silhouette perched on the top of an extinct volcano, dressed in white, is Qal Shmemis, a fort built in the th century by a Ayyoubide governor in Homs. Early in the morning or at the end of the day, you enjoy a pretty view of the steppe. It can be included in the return of an excursion to Rassafé and Isriyé or to the visits of Qasr ibn Wardan and Andarin. The most adventurous can climb up to the ruins of the castle through a paved but steep, rolling path. If the ruins in themselves don't show much interest, the sight of there deserves this intensive escalation exercise.
