Budget & Tips
For a basic double room (i.e. a bed between four walls and a tiny bathroom), it is necessary to count at least 100 US$ per night. Rates can double in high season, but also from one day to the next depending on the occupancy rate. To find the best prices, don't hesitate to do more research on the Internet, on the hotel's website and then with the help of comparators like Booking.com
Budget travellers will be happy with hostels, which offer rates of US$25 to US$100 per person in dormitories. A continental breakfast is often included in the price. In the United States, hostels are very common, the most famous chain, HI Hostel(www.hiusa.org), is present in New York, in the Upper West Side. To find independent hostels, visit www.hostels.com and www.hostelworld.com.
Another option, and not the least expensive: bed and breakfasts, often charming and romantic addresses nestled in beautiful restored houses. Rates range from US$150 to US$300 per night, and a minimum stay of two nights is sometimes required. A hot breakfast is usually included in the price. Some sites to check are www.bedandbreakfast.com, www.bnbfinder.com and www.selectregistry.com. In all establishments, cash and credit cards are accepted as payment.
Finally, you should know that wifi is free in most hotels, with the exception of a few luxury establishments that charge a daily supplement. Parking, when offered, is not free. Expect to pay between US$60 and US$80 per night.
To be booked
A small New York specificity, housing prices are so high that affordable hotels are taken over all year round! So don't be surprised if you see a businessman in a suit in the hallways of your YMCA. The watchword to get out of it without leaving too many feathers is preparation, and it must be maximum! Book early, up to six months in advance, especially if your stay falls during the tourist season (May to September and the Christmas and New Year holidays).
What's very local
The private individual to private advertisement site Airbnb offers very attractive offers in New York, but beware, many of them are illegal! New York City is in fact on a crusade against the reservation platform and, pushed by the powerful hotel lobby, has adopted very restrictive regulations against it. The law says that it is prohibited to rent an apartment in New York for less than 30 days, unless the owner occupies the apartment during your stay. By deduction, this means that renting a room in a private home is legal, but renting an entire apartment is not (except in the case of a stay of one month or more). If you find such an offer on Air Bnb, please be aware that as a customer, you are legally safe. But you take the risk that the ad will be removed by the site just before your arrival, in which case you will find yourself in the water.
Smokers
Most hotels in New York are 100% smoke-free, which means that smoking is not allowed in rooms or common areas. Small signs in the rooms indicate the price of the fine you will receive if you disobey, and it can range from 250 to 500 US$. Some establishments are resisting and still offer smoking rooms, as is the case with some chains such as Days Inn and Ramada Hotel.
Tourist traps
Since the vast majority of tourists book their accommodation well before they arrive in New York, scams are quite rare in this area. By going through the official website of the hotel you are interested in or by a comparator known to make your reservation, you are not risking much!
