Situated on the borders of the Velay and Auvergne regions, and in the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park, the town has long been an important lace-making center. Many a crowned head has worn Craponne guipures. Today, several monuments bear witness to this past: a 12th-century keep, remnants of the town wall and fortified gates, a 15th-century church with a remarkable 14th-century alabaster statue of the Virgin Mary, and several 18th-century town houses. Craponne is famous for its international country music festival in July and the trifòla potato festival in October.
