Chomelix comes from the Latin chalmelis which means water path, characteristic and typical of the commune, crossed by several small streams and two rivers: Arzon and Chamalière, and where there are many sources. Some vestiges of the megalithic period - Menhir of the Monteil - and Roman times - milliaires of the tracks Bolène and the path of Caesar, pottery, jewelry, currencies… - attest to a life on the commune since the highest antiquity. The Middle Ages were particularly rich. Four important castles were built in the th and th centuries: Chomelix-le-Haut, now totally destroyed, Chomelix-le-Bas, whose remains of a tower, Sereys, several times destroyed and reworked and Arzon, whose massive ruins dominate the Ruisseau creek. Chomelix has long been a passing point for pilgrims from Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle towards Puy-en-Velay, from the east. Two Saint James shells adorn the church walls as well as the records of the hospital.Chomelix retains on its territory the remains of a Roman track and a Gallo-Roman village in Sassac and more recent elements: The house of the Doorman or the Maison house in the Boudoux as well as a typical oven.
