This ciudad blanca, or white city, is the birthplace of the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956, who was exiled during the Franco regime. A major producer of strawberries, this pretty town has many artistic monuments, including the seventeenth-century hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Montemayor and the neoclassical town hall. Its most emblematic monument, however, is the Santa Clara Monastery, a fourteenth- and sixteenth-century building in which Christopher Columbus took refuge on his return from his first voyage to discover the Americas, as the city had played an active role in preparing for this expedition
