Although this town of almost 40,000 inhabitants was founded around the 8th century BC by the Tartessos civilization, it was during the Roman presence that it reached its apogee with the creation of the "colonia Augusta Firma Astigi" in 14 BC. Under the name of Astigi, it became one of the three capitals of Roman Betica. But it was above all the 18th century that was its golden age, making it a worthy representative of Andalusian Baroque, as evidenced by its towers and campaniles. Today, it prides itself on being one of Spain's leading equestrian centers, breeding purebred Spanish horses.
