It has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but it was the emperor Scipio the African who founded Itálica in 206 BC, the oldest city in Roman Hispania, which gave Rome two emperors, Trajan and Adrian, and was one of the most prosperous until the third century BC. It was one of the most prosperous until the third century BC, before falling into decadence in the following century and being abandoned. In 1301 the monastery of San Isidro del Campo was built, which served as the lordly authority of the urban nucleus then called Sevilla la vieja. When it was flooded in 1603, the survivors took refuge in the monastery. The monastery ceded them part of its land, including the ruins of Itálica.
