ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF SEVILLE
One of the richest museums in Spain archaeologically speaking in Seville
This museum is one of the richest in Spanish archeologically speaking! It was built in a neo-Renaissance pavilion designed between 1910 and 1915 by Aníbal González to become the Palace of Fine Arts of the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929. In 1942, most of the rooms (private donations or acquisitions of the town hall of Seville) were transferred to the museum. Its treasures, presented chronologically on three floors, date from the man of caves, Roman times, Wisigothe, Arabic… and the XIV century. In the basement, eighteen rooms exhibit objects of the Paleolithic and Neolithic origins mostly from the Carmona region. There are many fossils, as well as early bronze tools, discovered in the Don Juan cave in Constantina. We will also learn the presence of mammoths in Andalusia. On the ground floor, eighteen other rooms cover an era from Roman times to the end of the Middle Ages. A very large number of statues of the age of Hadrian, mainly from the Italique site, will be noted. Roman Andalusia, Wisigothic and Muslim is also represented by sculpted wood pieces.
The Monographic Room dedicated to the treasure of Carambolo will be discovered on the first floor. Discovered in 1958, in the belly of a hill near the city, it is quite fascinating: twenty-one jewels of a very fine gold, heavy of almost 3,000 kg testify indeed to the mysterious tartessional civilization that would go back to the century BC BC.
