At the end of a messa (table) of volcanic casting, at 540 m above sea level stands the Benedictine abbey of Chanteuges, with the village and its foulaquier. The first written record dates back to 936, when it was founded (or recognized) by the chapter provost. At the end of the th century, it was ruined by the rebellion of the «red monks» and under the impetus of Abbot Etienne de Mercoeur became a priory of the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu. The monks then undertake the restoration of the priory to make it a resort. At the beginning of the th century, Abbot Jacques de Senecterre made important work. The Cardinal de Rohan, involved in the Queen's necklaces affair, in exile at La Chaise-Dieu, stayed several times in Chanteuges. During the Revolution, the abbey and its property were sold as national property. Today, Chanteuges is home to the largest salmon of repeuplement in Europe!
