OFFICE DE TOURISME DE RODRIGUES
Tourist office located in the heart of an old wooden creole house renovated in Port Mathurin
A welcoming team welcomes the traveler in the center of Port Mathurin in the heart of an old renovated wooden Creole house which, in itself, is worth the detour. The place, wonderfully well organized and decorated, is a showcase of the main tourist attractions of the island (activities, good restaurants, stores...) and local know-how. In addition to the traditional brochures and other useful information booklets, the house houses a permanent exhibition of the main Rodriguan handicrafts, unavoidable culinary delights (honey, gingerbread, jars...) and the best books and CDs that can be found in Rodrigues - consultation possible on site. Each person is then free to acquire one or the other of these articles and products on the market-bazaar stalls, in the stores of Port Mathurin and/or in the various workshops of the country, according to the advice given by the person on duty. At the back of the room, a few didactic boards retrace the history of the island in a few major steps... We say bravo!
In a practical spirit, the Tourist Office also proposes the planning of the main events (festivals, parties, balls...) and makes available the bus schedules and the tides for the boat excursions. This information can also be found on the amazing Discover Rodrigues application which is full of general and practical data (maps of the island, transportation, climate...) and good addresses classified by categories (accommodation, restaurants, activities, popular spots, cultural places...). A must download before leaving!
Discovery Rodrigues. Established in the offices of the Tourist Office, this governmental body was specifically created to develop, operate and manage two of Rodrigues' flagship sites: Cocos Island and Caverne Patate. Except for buying the excursion from a local tour operator who will take care of everything (this is the simplest option, the one we recommend), it is necessary to go through this company to acquire an entrance ticket and especially an access authorization to the cave (visits at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm) or to the islet (departure in the morning at variable time according to the tide). It is through Discovery Rodrigues that one can also find the list of licensed local boatmen who go to Cocos Island every day for a fee of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,800 per person depending on the comfort of the boat and the services offered.
