Trou d'Eau Douce, a large, still-authentic village surrounded by vegetation, stretches along both sides of the coastal road. The center is quite lively, with a few restaurants and snack bars, numerous tin-roofed stores and a small supermarket... The place is famous for being the nearest departure point for the famous Ile aux Cerfs. While the teardrop-shaped strip of sand on the latter islet is famous throughout Mauritius, the resort of Trou d'Eau Douce has no real beach. For a swim, it's best to head north out of the village towards Palmar, just past the cemetery. It's even better to continue on towards Belle Mare, where the beaches are magnificent. From Trou d'Eau Douce, continuing north to Pointe Lafayette, lies the seaside area of eastern Mauritius, mainly made up of luxury establishments.
