Marked by the seal of history and still rich in old buildings from the colonial era, Souillac is the area occupied by the first French settlers when they arrived on the island at the beginning of the 18th century. Its name comes from Viscount François de Souillac, a member of the high nobility of the Kingdom of France, the King's naval officer and Governor General of the Mascareignes from 1779 to 1784. From the top of its black basaltic cliffs, the town dominates the sea, which is much rougher than elsewhere in the absence of a coral barrier. One comes here to admire the wild beach of Gris-Gris, and further on, the Roche qui pleure - a rocky outcrop flowing with water
