L'ALCHIMISTE
Read moreThere's a definite dose of alchemy at this fine table, one of the best on the island, which pays tribute to Mauritian produce while sublimating it: organic fruit and vegetables, game (unforgettable braised pork with truffle sauce), venison charcuterie, etc., not to mention cocktails and desserts based on the house rums. The cosy dining room opens onto a courtyard with tables under gazebos. To top it all off (a miracle?), the prices are very reasonable, given the generosity and quality of the dishes. A fine wine list too.
LE CHAMAREL RESTAURANT PANORAMIQUE
Read morePerched on its hillside, the Chamarel restaurant offers one of the finest dining experiences in Mauritius, a feast for the taste buds and the eyes. From each of the open-air decks, the view plunges down to the entire southern coastline. It's a feast for the palate, literally and figuratively, because in addition to its site, the restaurant offers an attractive menu of local Mauritian dishes to be discovered via the Table Créole, a 4-course authentic cuisine menu. If you're on a tight schedule, drop by in the morning for breakfast or during the day for a Coffee Experience.
PALAIS DE BARBIZON
Read moreIt is one of the true tables d'hôtes in the area and the best address in this category. Marie-Ange and Rico, well-known figures in Chamarel, run this simple and friendly restaurant, specializing in Creole cuisine. Marie-Ange is a chef at heart and cooks, according to the products of the market and the vegetable garden, old recipes of the Mauritian cuisine and sometimes some Indian and Chinese dishes. We sit down for a menu of the day composed of several dishes with achards, plus the unavoidable banana flambé for dessert and Rico's ti-punch as an aperitif!
VARANGUE SUR MORNE
Read more4km from the village, open for over 30 years, it's a Chamarel institution. Clad in floor-to-ceiling wood, the room opens onto the outside in lodge style, offering an exceptional view of nature, Le Morne and a stretch of lagoon. It's a big place, often overrun by groups, so don't count on intimacy so much as "a taste for a cuisine that mirrors this island mosaic and transforms every meal into a gustatory experience", as owner José Hitié likes to say - and you'll put me down for a banana flambéed in old rum!
LES PALMIERS
Read moreMuch larger than the average, designed to accommodate groups as well as individual clients, this table d'hôtes serves daily dishes of Indo-Mauritian cuisine in a room as large as the owners' ambitions. Even if it is not our favorite setting, the same family has been running the business for 20 years, a guarantee of a certain form of regularity and quality. On the menu: curries accompanied by rice, faratas and achards, spicy fish served with local vegetables, deer curry in season, etc.
RESTAURANT DES SEPT COULEURS
Read moreOn the site of the Geopark, this small fast food restaurant is especially noteworthy for its beautiful panoramic location overlooking the copper-colored sheep. A few wooden tables placed under thatched huts allow you to take a drink break (fresh juice, local coffee, homemade iced tea, etc.) and/or to have a snack - choice of sandwiches, paninis, grills, pastries, ice cream... Taste the freshly squeezed cane juice, the flavor of the islands. And also the Chamarel Coffee, an Arabica grown on volcanic soil that gives it a unique taste.
